SUBJ:  244TH BIRTHDAY OF THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

1. To all United States Marines - Happy 244th Birthday from your seagoing partners

in the United States Coast Guard.

2. The United States Marine Corps has a rich heritage of service to our Republic.

Since 1775, when the Second Continental Congress authorized the creation of two
battalions of Marines, you have been our Nation’s Soldiers of the Sea. Serving always
with fidelity, you epitomize the naval Core Values of Honor, Courage and Commitment,
fighting our country’s battles in every clime and place.

3. This year we celebrate the 100th birthday of Coast Guard Signalman First Class

Douglas Munro, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for evacuating Marines from the beaches of Guadalcanal. We also honor and remember all those Marines who have given the last full measure of devotion to their country. Their selfless
sacrifice shall never be forgotten.

4. The bond between the United States Marine Corps and the United States Coast Guard
remains as strong as ever. As we confront evolving threats to the Homeland and our interests abroad, we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our fellow sea service to defend our Constitution, our values, and our way of life.

5. Semper Fidelis and Semper Paratus!

6. ADM Karl L. Schultz, Commandant, United States Coast Guard, sends.
